Revision as of 23:01, 22 January 2018

General Information

The UW CSE Ski Day 2018 is Friday, January 26th at Stevens Pass.

The deadline to sign up has been moved FORWARD to January 12th because Stevens Pass requires rental and lesson information two weeks in advances.

We are confirmed and ready to go. If you need a ride to Stevens Pass, please see the Carpools section and coordinate with a driver.

The sign up deadline has passed. Any modification to rentals, lift tickets, and lessons on this page will NOT be tracked and updated. If you need to modify your sign up please email Shumo and Vincent directly ASAP (chushumo@cs, vlee2@cs). We cannot guarantee cancellations at this point because Stevens has already processed the orders. If you need to cancel past this point you may be responsible for paying Stevens if we get charged.

When should you arrive

If you are taking lessons, please plan to arrive no later than 9:00 AM to ensure you have time to get your lift tickets, get ready, obtain your rental equipment, etc. Lessons start at 10:00 AM sharp; Stevens Pass will force us to forfeit the registration fee if you are late. There are several other groups that day so make sure to allow time for rental pick up, etc.

If you're not doing lessons, you can arrive whenever you want but you probably want to get a few hours in skiing before lunch.

Note that it takes roughly 1.75 to 2.25 hours to get to Stevens Pass depending on road conditions, accidents, etc. If you are taking a lesson, make sure to coordinate with your driver so you get here on time.

What to do when you arrive

When you first arrive at Stevens Pass, please come to the Pacific Crest Lodge to collect your lift ticket, and instructions for rentals. One of us (Vincent, Shumo, or Hank) will be staffing the command center so that you can pick up your lift tickets until ~10:00-10:30 AM. If you arrive after that, we'll leave a sign in sheet on the table with the passes where you can help yourself to your lift tickets. Make sure to sign the sheet when you pick up a ticket so that we can keep track of who picked up what. Please also pick up and equip an arm band which we'll have by the sign in sheet. These will help us identify each other on the slopes throughout the day.

CSE Command Center

Stevens Pass has allocated a room in the Pacific Crest Lodge for us where we will be handling all of our logistics from. This room is where you can store your stuff, pick up your lift tickets, hang out, and later in the day will become where we will have lunch, beer, snacks, and wine. There will probably be people here throughout the day but the room is not secure so do not leave valuables here.

Approximate Schedule of Events

9:00 AM - Lifts Begin Operation (ski, board, ski, board)
10:00 AM - Lessons Start
12:00 PM - Lunch at the Pacific Crest Lodge
3:30-4:30 PM - After party at the Pacific Crest Lodge (beer, snacks, wine)
4:30 PM-Whenever - Ski/Snowboard more or head home. Stevens Pass has night skiing on 1/26 so you can stay until 10PM if you'd like.

I still need a ride

If you still need a ride, please add yourself to the "Riders in Need" list on the wiki. If you have a ride, make sure to remove yourself from the "Riders in Need" list on the wiki. The procedures for how to get yourself into a carpool are documented in the wiki.

Drivers

Please be advised that there may potentially be winter driving conditions. WSDOT requires all vehicles either have 4-wheel drive, or carry chains. They're usually pretty good about plowing the road and most of the time you can get away without chaining up.

Cancellation

If you do not make it to the lessons on time, Stevens Pass will charge us a no show and forfeit the registration fee. Similarly if you have a rental but do not pick it up, we will also get charged a no show. If you have to cancel for whatever reason, please let one of us know ASAP and we'll try and figure out what to do from there. If you have a last minute cancellation, we may have to charge you a cancellation depending on how lenient Stevens Pass is.

Communications

All communications on the day of will either go out through the "ski-day-2018" Slack channel or email. In the rare event that we have to cancel ski day, we will broadcast announcements on all available channels as soon as we know that the cancellation is imminent. Please make sure to monitor you slack or email on the day of.

Old Stuff

GETTING THERE:
Let's try to CARPOOL as much as we can.

LUNCH AND ROOM RESERVATION:
Hank is providing a lunch starting at about noon. Please tell us if you prefer meat or vegetarian when you sign up!

THE AFTER PARTY:
Will happen in the same places where we have lunch.

GEAR UP:
Please dress warmly, bring extra layers, wear a water-resistant layer on the outside, and bring a change of clothes (or at least socks). If you lack appropriate clothing or don't know what appropriate clothing is, please post your needs or questions below under Ski Clothing. If you have extra gear, please check below and help out your fellow CSE snow bunnies. Remember sunblock and hydrate well in preparation. Wear a helmet.

SIGN UP:
Please Sign Up below, indicating whether you need lift tickets/rentals/lessons, by editing yourself into the table under your preferred option. You should also indicate your lunch preferences. Please sign up as soon as possible as we need to give the numbers to Stevens Pass.

  7. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

Intermediate+ package

For intermediate lessons, Stevens now offers a "Ski Clinic" deal which is a 2 hour intermediate/advanced group lesson for $59.00. The rentals and lift ticket are not included so you have to also pay for those but you get a small discount on the lift ticket. In total this comes out to $59.00 (lesson) + $40.00 (lift ticket) + $36.00 (rental) = $135.00. The lift ticket is a full lift ticket and is good for the entire mountain. Lessons start at 10:00 a.m., and they recommend you show up 1.5 hours before the lesson if you need to pick up rentals.

Providing own ticket

Choose this if you will provide your own lift ticket, like if you have a season pass. Note that, once you factor in tax, our group rate is the same as the Stevens Advantage Card discount rate. The more tickets we buy as a group, the better perks we get, so we'd prefer Advantage Card holders buy a group ticket (one of the options above).

Pay Up

Check will be collected after the event (although you're welcome to pay before as well :). Make your check to "University of Washington."

Carpool Signup

If you are planning to drive and have extra seats in your car, add yourself to the first table. Keep in mind that you may be driving in snowy/icy conditions and you may need chains if your car is not AWD. For updated road conditions check the WSDOT website and take a moment to refresh your snow driving skills. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive to Stevens pass from UW in good weather/traffic conditions. Plan for not-so-good conditions :)

Please indicate where you will be leaving from, what time you will leave Seattle, what time you will leave Stevens, how many more people you can fit (please update this as your car fills), and whether you can fit skis/snowboard (basically, if you have a rack, or if the skis will take up a seat). If you like, you can also indicate who your passengers are. Please try to fill up your car by contacting people who need rides above.

If you are looking for a ride, email an available driver to make arrangements, then add yourself to their riding column here. If there are no available drivers, add yourself as a row to the second table. Hopefully, by Friday, the second table will be empty :).

Ski Clothing

Rentals include ski boots (or snowboard boots, if you go that way).

Having the following clothes/equipments is recommended:

Upper body:

  • basic layer: wool, silk, polyester next to skin (cotton is not recommended since it is not warm when wet)
  • warm layer: any Insulation layer of your choice to keep you warm
  • shell layer: wind/water-proof is ideal

(Note: some insulated jackets can be used as two layers combined )

Lower body

  • pants: wind/waterproof is ideal
  • long socks: short socks are not ideal for ski or snowboard boots

Accessories:

  • Gloves/Mittens
  • Helmet (or at least a warm hat)
  • Goggles (if you are a first timer and would not go fast, sunglasses work well perhaps)

For more comprehensive information on recommended clothing, check out this Layering Basics.

If you don't have clothing appropriate for winter sports, post your needs here (goggles, ski pants, gloves etc.). If you have extra gear, please email people to help fill their needs. You can rent helmets from the rental shop!
